I realized that if I was still stewing about Sara Bareilles being censored on my local radio station hours later I should probably voice my complaints to the radio station, which I did, via Strongly Worded Email.
The programming director actually emailed back. He understood my point, he said, thinks it's a great song, agrees that the word being cut out dilutes the power of the verse, but because of their listener base they need to keep the music suitable for workplaces and small children during the day, and what they play is the official radio edit sent out by the record label.
I guess I understand his point, too, but I'm still grumpy about it.
(also the particular edit shows me where a very fine line is. "Hell" was left in. "Damn" was left in. "Goddamn" has to go. people are touchy about some weird stuff...)
