...actually we only saw one movie. but we went to an honest-to-gosh drive-in, and the experience was extremely good. the one we went to charged by the car, allowed outside snacks, and had audio on low-power FM; the other patrons were very good about not turning their headlights on and off, we could chat without disturbing anyone, and since the car has a hybrid engine we could keep it technically on the whole time to run the radio and the air conditioning but it only kicked in 3-4 times throughout the movie. (also I loved the group that came in on bicycles with folding chairs and just set up camp in a single parking spot.)

(without the hybrid engine I probably would have wanted my own folding chair and a FM radio so we didn't have to burn gas the whole time. there's two other drive-ins near me (which boggled my mind!) that I think have apps to stream the audio but this particular one has been a more or less going concern since the '50s so they're still a little behind the times on the tech.)

I'd give it an 8/10, would drive in again.

also would give Barbie an 8/10, would watch again. Daughter was like 'how did they get Mattel to sign off on this?' because on top of everything else the portrayal of Mattel itself was not entirely flattering! (and the movie was meta on that level including a fourth-wall-breaking narrator who at one point commented that if they wanted to make the point that Barbie 'isn't pretty anymore' then Margot Robbie might not have been the best casting choice. :) ) I loved it, I loved the humor, I loved that metaness, I loved the casting, I loved gender-fluid (?) icon Allan.. of course all anyone wants to talk about is the gender politics of the movie spoilers, including things said much better by people much smarter than me )

anyways I loved it and there's one other character who didn't even get a name and was on screen for a total of 30 seconds and he's poking my brain in hopes of making some thoughts fall out so I will probably watch it again at some time in the future if I haven't been distracted by another shiny thing.

(*) especially having seen it, the reaction of conservative men to this movie reminds me of a thing Olivia Wilde talked about, a table reading of American Pie where the men got female roles and the women got male roles and the women were loving getting all the good jokes and the quips and just getting to be a little raunchy and the men were all like 'I hate this, this is so boring...' and she was like HMM YOU DON'T SAY.
