Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Does anyone have any plans for making Christmas gifts or cards?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

Literally the funniest thing I have read about the Heated Rivalry tv show so far (thanks to the Rec Center newsletter last Friday):

"With Hockey RPF the fanfic was for the romance and the sex, the things canon didn't provide. But in Heated Rivalry canon does provide. So logic dictates that the fanfic is there to make them actually play hockey." - (from bluesky)

It's not just me who wants more hockey in the hockey romance!

(Heated Rivalry is still not legally available in the UK; HBO Max is launching in the UK in March, hopefully it'll include the show when it does.)

Meanwhile my Rick Riordan reading adventure has come to the end of the 10 (ten!) books I bought on Kindle a decade ago for no reason I now remember, so I have been wrangling the local libraries to get more. I'm officially off sick today with this stupid cough, and resting / reading a lot.

  • I could be reading through the large pile of library Riordans ... but no
  • I could be reading one of the other four library books I have out that are due back this week ... but no
  • I could read one of the several books I already bought in December ... but no
  • I could go wild and watch the episodes-so-far of Percy Jackson on Disney+ (challenge my inability to watch anything by myself!) ... but no
  • I am actually reading a modern AU fanfic of Much Ado About Nothing and vaguely wondering about challenging my inability to watch anything by myself with the Tennant/Tate production

Attempted socialing and work work

I attempted to do social things twice this weekend and neither attempt happened. Saturday was an SCA event, but I looked at the weather and our wood levels and decided that I needed to split wood on Saturday instead. It was the only day that even approached near freezing, it hovered around 30F with only a little wind. In contrast, yesterday was 25F with 10-20 mph winds. Freezing cold, I was displeased, today is also supposed to be windy.

So Saturday, I split wood. I had to chainsaw a lot of the logs as I went since the bobcat can only pick up 16 foot lengths and the logs we had delivered were 32. That warmed me up nicely for sure. Nothing wanted to start and run well since it was so chilly first thing in the morning. Once I did that, I started with our outdoor burner wood, I split big logs into big chunks in the back of the dump trailer. This is probably two weeks of wood. We split this pretty much as big as we can lift, although I like a eight inch diameter log to be split in half for ease of throwing into the burner. Once it gets heavier, it is hard to throw it to the back of the burner.

A green dump trailer heaped full of split wood.

Tarte Tatin
ACTIVE: 45 MIN TOTAL TIME: 2 HR 15 MIN SERVINGS: 8

INGREDIENTS

One 14-ounce package all-butter puff pastry
1 stick unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
12 Golden Delicious apples—peeled, halved lengthwise and cored
Crème fraiche, for serving

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the puff pastry 1/8 inch thick. Cut out a 12-inch round, transfer to a baking sheet and refrigerate; reserve the pastry scraps for another use.
In a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, melt the butter. Add the sugar and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a simmer, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Arrange the apple halves standing upright in the skillet in 2 snug concentric circles. Return to the heat and cook undisturbed until an amber caramel forms, about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°. Top the apples with the puff pastry and bake for about 40 minutes, until the pastry is golden and the apples are tender. Let cool for 15 minutes.

Place a large plate on top of the skillet and carefully invert the tart. Serve warm with crème fraiche.

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purply sky with stars. Text reads "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid-guardian.dreamwidth.org."

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 8, up to 22:19

Summary
The SID enthusiastically welcomes Guo Changcheng as an official employee, and Lin Jing gives him the fear baton. ♥ Zhao Yunlan arranges to buy some old books and then calls Shen Wei to offer them as a gift, while Zhu Hong and Da Qing gossip about his black-heartedness and obsession with Shen Wei. Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing meet a student in the street to buy the books, then sit around and talk about recruiting Shen Wei to the SID. Zhao Yunlan is openly smitten. ♥ But presenting the gift to Shen Wei does not go as planned: Zhao Yunlan gives a fake provenance for the books, Shen Wei leaves, and Zhao Yunlan slinks off to recover his dignity in private drink tea and talk about new SID premises. A mysterious letter gives Wang Zheng flashbacks. Changcheng and Chu Shuzhi run into Ding Dun in the street juuuust before receiving an APB about him. The Envoy comes to the SID to request help tracking him down, but Da Qing is hesitant to proceed without their fearless leader. Chu Shuzhi sets to work anyway and takes Changcheng with him. Meanwhile, Zhu Jiu murders Ding Dun, whose body the others find and take back to the SID? (Or pass on to the Envoy?) On the university campus that night, Shen Wei confides in Ying Chun while wearing an ascot. Zhu Jiu shows up, and fisticuffs ensue (Ying Chun helps Shen Wei), but Zhu Jiu escapes. Ying Chun points out the dangers in Shen Wei's plan to go after a missing item, but Shen Wei is resolved.

Quote
Lin Jing: This is my newest invention. It can transform fear into electricity. The more fear, the more electricity. In other words, I made it especially as the perfect, most powerful weapon you could have.
Guo Changcheng: E...electricity? I'm also afraid of electricity.

Detail
When Zhao Yunlan calls Shen Wei about the old books, the original subs say, "What a coincidence! I have a lot of old books," and the VIKI subs say, "You are so lucky as I have some in my home!" while Solo's subs have "As it happens, regarding this, the two of us were brought together by fate." The last is closest to the Chinese subs: 巧了 咱俩在这个事上 太有缘了 ("What a coincidence! We're so destined to meet on this matter." according to Google Translate).

Questions
Do you have a stand-out favourite scene or quote from the first half of episode 8? Is everyone genuinely glad to have Guo Changcheng onboard? Does Shen Wei as the Envoy already have a red stamp, and if so, when/how did he get it? On a scale of 1 to 10, how smitten is Zhao Yunlan with Shen Wei? On a scale of 1 to 10, how sympathetic is Da Qing to this smittenness? Who sends the APB on Ding Dun? (Presumably not the Envoy!) How do you feel about ascots? How great is the fight with Zhu Jiu?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

And here is our schedule -- if you can, please sign up to host a post!

I started playing Assassin's Creed: Unity and realised that I know almost nothing about the French Revolution. We did study it in grade 10, but I missed a lot of time due to a never-identified virus -- I was out for most of the American Revolution and all of the French, and mostly passed the class because I knew more about the Chinese Communist Revolution than my teacher. (It's not her fault, she was an art teacher who was roped in to teach history for ... reasons which I'm sure made sense at the time.)

Anyway, I've decided to fill the gap in my knowledge. I started out by trying to listen to The Rest Is History, a podcast my mum recommended, but the hosts are two English men, and they spend a weird amount of time comparing Marie Antoinette to Meghan Markle, but in a derogatory "maybe we should decapitate the Duchess of Sussex" way that I did not care for.

Then I read The French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert, which I think is from 1980. It was a solemn, dispassionate accounting of events and personalities, but didn't get into the question of, for example, why the Parisian mob went from zero to heads on pikes in the storming of the Bastille.

I've requested an inter-library loan for Citizens by Simon Schama, which I've seen recommended a lot, but I would also be eager to read a history that's not ... British? Because the British, for understandable reasons (I guess) weren't really down with the beheading of the monarch and the end of the monarchy (even though they did it first), and I feel like a pro-aristocratic bias has pervaded a lot of what I've encountered. And obviously the Terror was bad, but, like, maybe Robespierre was an asexual smol bean who was a convenient scapegoat! I'm open to the possibility!

I am open to suggestions, is what I'm saying.

The office has been emptied! This is very exciting! My dad and I spent this afternoon transferring their office stuff from the farmhouse to the spare bedroom at the fun house. It was three not very full truck bed loads with the worst thing being dad's desk which could and was disassembled for travel and the countertop that was mom's desk. That was a custom cut length of particle board countertop with a backsplash.

They set up a temporary office in the spare bedroom because they still haven't finish the actual office but honestly, that is not my problem. I mean, it is kinda. But they said they were willing to do it like this and I believe them.

But we got everything over there and they are currently over there setting up their computers and all that jazz.

I have been contemplating the room.

The house layout is a C with the backdoor/main entry into the kitchen at one end of the C, then my future office + bathroom, the living room with the wood stove and then the old office at the end of the C. It will be my crafting room. Wait, let me MS paint this for better view

A terrible looking MS paint image of the house layout
beautiful, I am an architect.

this house layout is so nonsensical because the original house was actually only the sections labeled "my future office" and "living room" and they slapped on the left half later with a proper concrete basement instead of stone farmhouse basement, and the back porch/pantry/bathroom again later but they (previous owners before my parents) only put an uninsulated (literal) crawlspace below that so the bathroom is in danger of freezing pipes when it gets below zero even if the rest of the house is warm enough.

The room is a good one for crafting because I will have my loom there and that takes up space and also my many spinning wheels. Very pleased with it. I don't mind my office being a through fare because it'll just be me for now and desks can be set against walls. I wasn't planning to make any changes to the crafting room because I wanted to get things in there but now that almost everything is out of it, I think I want to make changes. Sigh.

The walls are a tan color that has changed to more of a peachy cream. They haven't been painted since we moved into the house in 2000. We had dogs that clearly slept against one wall because it is brown. It is dinged up all over. And also I don't like the peachy cream. So I guess I need to paint it. And I kinda knew that. I have picked out a light purple/blue that looks nice. But I'm also looking at the carpet. And the carpet is nasty. And worn. You can see where my dad had his office chair. The desk feet have left indents that much have fully compressed the carpet and under carpet to mush because the vacuum couldn't get the dust out of the indents.

I don't waaaaanna tear the carpet out and sand the floors and refinish them. But the only thing in the room right now is a big shelf and if I'm going to do it, now might be the time. Arg.

Someday I want to make big changes to the whole thing including tearing out the rest of the carpet, refinishing all the floors, making a pathway directly from the kitchen to the living room through the basement stairwell (only a problem because there's a chimney in the wall there somewhere), the entire back addition of backporch/pantry/bathroom needs to be torn off the house and rebuilt with insulation and turn it into a mudroom/bathroom, wall off my office so it can be accessed from the mudroom without going through the kitchen.

But for now, maybe just painting and getting the carpet out.
